With the reasons people have listed aside, it's still an exploit to get around the permission system within second life and the ToS. Furthermore, these are tools whose purpose is to knowingly and consciously harm others, the knowledge required to use a copybot viewer requires a level of knowledge that can't be explained by user ignorance. If you want a copybot viewer, then you know what it is for. The harm caused by these viewers is not exactly the same as the usual argument against piracy. It is not uncommon for copybotters to steal and then attempt to resell the work of others. Unlike products that are pirated and torrented, this reselling does result in direct financial losses to the IP holder, as the buyer was willing to pay; unlike when people pirate movies or software in general where the argument of lost sales being a myth holds weight. In short, I argue that a sale is defined as lost when the action results in a real financial loss, and not simply the product being taken without payment.
An item that is copybotted and resold, is taking a sale and money that would very plausibly have gone to the original creator otherwise, and therefore a real loss is made; a theft of financial asset. And this is therefore the harm that copybot viewers are capable and in fact aimed towards. As well as being against the ToS and being an exploit of grid mechanics.
And therefore should have no place on this subreddit as they are primarily harmful in nature. No and not just because it enables people to be able to steal from others. Copybot viewers also tend to have code in them that allow for stealing of the viewer users accounts as well. You can't even assure there not performing DDoS attacks on peoples webpages (in the style of emerald) or any other bad things like that. There's simply no quality control on them as there an underground item.
It's simply not safe for the members of this community. Not to mention the fact we have new players joining this sub.
What does it say to new players if we allow this kind of thing in our sub? That stealing and acting like an ass is okay? Is that the kind of message we as a group want to impart to our new players? In no uncertain terms, No.
This subreddit is called and is about Second Life. If you want to post about a viewer that's allowed on SL (Firestorm, RLV, whatever) then by all means do so. But copybot viewers are against the SL terms of service, and reddit isn't supposed to be used for promoting illegal activities. Call it off-topic if you like: posts linking to viewers that can't legally be used on Second Life.
Why post them to the Second Life subreddit? Or call it trolling: because the poster is looking to stir up a flame war 'for the lulz'. Or call it entrapment: as they dangle the tantalizing cookie of 'you can take anything for free, be unstoppable, be a pirate', hoping to tempt some SL user to try and log in with copybot, and suddenly they get banned. None of the above is a good reason to allow such content here. If you want to have a discussion ABOUT the state of copyright law as it pertains to SL, that's one thing. But if you want to post links where people can download copybot viewers that enable content/ip theft? Go away, we don't want you here.
If you want to post about your copybot viewer, go create your own subreddit. If copybot viewers are allowed on other grids, then go post about it in those grids' subreddits. They're not allowed in SL, and links to get them shouldn't be allowed in either. The same should go for any tools or technology, hints or tricks that enables circumventing the permissions system, or links to sites, videos or blogs that encourage or glamorize some other violation of the SL terms of service.
